[BOBCATS-LYNX] Re: Lynx
Ok, here's my story! I
hesitated to go into details only because I didn't want to have
to relive the guilt and sadness it brings me. We decided to look
into purchasing either a bobcat or lynx kitten. We already
have a cougar we got ten years ago as a kitten of 4 weeks. He
turned out awsome and he has never had to go to the vet.
He is also very friendly to us and has never shown aggression
(other then food issues). So taking on a Lynx should have
been a repeat more or less. I researched and researched lynx and
breeders. I found a breeder who is located in the same
state as I and seemed to have knowledge on them as well.
His web pages seemed informative. I was intrigued with what he
called the "Yukon" lynx he described. After many emails
back and forth, we decided to go and visit him. He has a
very large house and surround area. As he started showing
us his cats and pens, I was getting more and more
disgusted. The cats were in small housing. Most
shared thier living spaces. The pens were about 6'x
10'. The fencing was cheap with large enough holes that
the cats could and DID reach through and fight with each
other. They were in rows. Also, he told us how
several have gotten loose over the years and have never been
seen again. (This was evident from the live traps he had
in his garage) As a matter of fact, one cat escaped while
we were there, but was confined in this walkway between
cages. He was able to heard it back into it's pen with a
shovel. NONE of his cats are friendly. When I asked
about this, he said he likes it that way because they tend to
breed easier. I was a bit taken back because he said that
lynx and bobcats are so easliy trained to be lap kitties.
He had several different cats there. He also went on to
show us more cats, some of which looked sick. He explained
that 'it was normal for them to get sick in the winter, and that
he just gives them anitbiotics and it normally goes
away'!!! THIS did not sound right to us! NONE were fat
and sassy either. The pens were not clean, with many
having old feces laying around. He showed us some that he
said were rescues and offered them for sale. He showed us
some that were blind, ears missing, and lame. He told us
about how the USDA was alway arguing with him and told us about
how they were trying to get him to give his Servals and Caracles
shelter from the sun and weather. He said how insane that was
because they are desert cats and are use to hot weather!!!
Yes, he is right.... how insane HIS theory is!!! I don't
now how the USDA passes this place for many reasons!
Needless to say, I was NOT impressed. But, I wanted a lynx
kitten bad enough, thinking once we got a kitten it would be
fine under OUR conditions. He also went on to explain to
us that he sells this 'whole prey' food, and strongly suggested
we keep our cat on it. He also suggested these other
vitamins he sells as well. My husband and I disgust
whether or not to leave a deposit and did so, again thinking we
could do it. We told him then and there what litter we wanted a
kitten from, and that we wanted the kitten as young and safely
as possible so we could bottle feed it ourself. (We have
extensive bottle feeding experience) So we left him a
deposit. Many email exchanged before the litters were
due. These emails contained SO MANY lies...... I could go
on and on about the lies these emails contained but this would
turn into a much longer tail of events. He did in
one email tell me that kittens were born on so and so date and I
could pick them up on a certain day. Well I sent him an
email asking is so and so date/time was ok. He then wrote
back and said they were not born yet, although I still have the
email he sent saying they were in fact born. He then said
that there others before me who paid and they come first (even
though he already told me a date to come pick one up).....
oh this is going to be a book if I don't shorten this up so I
will try........Longer story short, I was told then that the
pair I wanted a kitten from never produced ANY KITTENS. I
was shocked and disappointed as I had requested a kitten from
this pair as he said they were his best ones. He had
turned into a real jerk. I knew of so many lies he had
already told me and I requewsted my deposit money back. He
never responded, so I again asked for it back. His wife
finally answered me and seemed very appologetic for HIS
behaviour and said she would make things right. She said she
would GIVE me 50lbs of their 'whole prey' food. Well when
we were finally give another date to come and pick up a kitten
it was his wife who greeted us. She is very nice. We were
led out to this small office type trailer that housed many
kittens that were stuffed into plastic dog crates. One
crate med/size had 7 kittens in it. There must have been
about 20 kittens that day. All roughly the same age.
I asked her if the pair of Lynx had kittens that I wanted one
from and she said YES!!! I was furious! She then
proceeded to bring them out of a kennel! I told her Peter
had told me they never produced any and she said "yes, I know,
he is just trying to get more money out of them". I was
shaking I was so mad. She said she would sell me one, but
they were too young to let go and I would have to take it at my
own risk. They were 3 weeks old. She told me over
and over they were too young, and it would be too risky. I
could have waited to go there for another couple of weeks if
Peter would have been truthful with me, but he was just a
pathological liar as I had already found out before that!
He don't KNOW the truth if it slapped him in the face. We
chose another kitten and took it home with the food they
gave us, and the special vitamins they SOLD us. They gave
us vague direction on the vitamins because as they say:
'we feed in large quanities, so just give them a pinch or so'.
She did well on the milk. She seemed happy and content,
but was not gaining much weight. I had to guess at the
amount of vitamins and such, but I added it daily. When it
came time to wean her onto solids, she refused to eat their
'whole prey' food. Because she wasn't gaining much weight,
I was getting worried. She refused to even taste this
crap. It looked like a bunch of chopped up feathers with
fat added to it and smelled worse! She would eat chicken
and turkey, but I knew she needed more. I finally decided
to force a taste down her thinking if she got a taste of it she
would like it. NOT... ! the very next day she had
bloody diareaha and I had to take her to vet. That was
when I decided to never feed that too her again. We
continued feeding her turkey and chicken but she was too young
to eat the bones yet. I continued giving her these so
called vitamins but she just didn't seem to grow very much and
was always thin. She acted fine though, playing constantly
with our cat and us. She was so loving too. One day we
can in and she was limping bad. We took her to vet and
they x-rayed her and said nothing was broke. The vets told us
she needed calcium and to feed her a good quality CANNED CAT
FOOD! This goes against what ALL exotic cat breeders say.
But we tried it. She wouldn't eat it. She SLOWLY got
better, but was never good with her hind leg. We took her to
another exotic vet in OR. He told us he would not even see
us if we didn't agree to put her on Zoopreme. (canned cat
food) That she needed more calcium in her diet. We
agreed. He checked her out and said to keep her on the
Zoopreme. She always had a limp. She was now about 4
months old. Then we came in another day and she was squatted
down on floor in extreme pain. She wouldn't let us touch
her even. We took her back to this vet. She had been
on Zoopreme about 2-3 weeks by this time and was skinny because
she refused to eat anything, before she started eating this
zoopreme. The doc insisted she wouldn't starve and not to
feed her anything but. But now, she was in bad shape. I
was afraid she broke her leg. They did x-ray and she did
in fact break it in 3 diffent places, requiring surgery.
The doc explained her bones were so thin it was a difficult
surgery. The next day when we picked her up, she was out
of it still. All the way home she was having
siezures. I called vet and he said to double up on the
calcium supplemets we had been giving her. The next
morning she was completely out of it. I called vet, took
her in, and they gave her valuim to stop the siezing and again
sent us home with her....... She died on the way home. I
can't tell you how bad I feel even now. And still now I can't
stop the tears as this is all bringing it back to me. She
died in my arms. She had touched our heart in her short time
with us like I can't even explain. I just held her and
cried and cried begging her to come back to me in that parking
lot. I couldn't beleive it. I had trusted this so
called breeder when he said 'give her these vitamins/food and
she will do great'. I trusted him when he said he knew it
all..... m/l..I do take a lot of the blame. I should have
given her more calcium on my own. I should have given her
Zoopreem from the start? I should have called this
vitamin company to get exact dosages. I should have given
her calcium... I know this now. It's too late. I DO
take partial blame for this. After her failing to follow
this breeders suggestions, I thought we could do as we did with
our cougar. All the above was wrong. And now my
Cookie is gone. I don't know where Cookie came from
exactly. I do know that another breeder has told me that she
sold a brother and sister to this Peter years ago, and told him
it was brother and sister and to not breed them. At that
time, it was suppose to be Peters first lynx. I don't know if
this could be a result of this breeding? Peter has done nothing
but lie to me. From day one. I also know that with
the authorities came here to question me, they had interviewed 5
other victims of his. Out of those 5 who bought kittens
from him only one was still alive. Thats only 5 out of the
50-75 he claims to have each year. He claims to be a
non-profit org? HA...... if you multiply $1750-$2000 for
each 50-75 kittens he sells, hmmmmm since when did it cost
$120,000+? I could go on and on and on....... but he is
being investigated and looks like many charges will be filed any
day if they have't been already. He is now claiming that
he has to sell his 'business of cats' Just beware.....
there are good breeders and then there is Peters out
there. I now have my deposit on a reptuable breeder who the
detective himself suggested. She knows first hand about
his Peter as well, and has spoken with many victims of his as
well. I will miss Cookie for the rest of my life. I
will never forget the little pprrr and wrinkkled lips she would
give us each time we came home. She had the run of the
house, and gave us so much enjoyment the short time she was
here. I feel horrible for being the cause of her death.
I have learned, but at what expense? This new breeder has
a proven 30 year recipie for success. She knows what it
takes to raise a big healthy happy kitty, and I will put my
whole trust in her. You asked what happened, now you
know.... sorry it took so long to explain
it.

Lynx
I also have a similar story... you all know Willy my bobcat..
well his rouhg journy started off bad also.. I got him from a
breeder in OK.. i did not know this breeder, a friend of mine lives
there and said there was someone there breeding them, she is not a
cat person so she was not all sure what to look for, but she said
the kittens looked good so i told her to pick me up one, she did and
shipped him to me.. I got Willy at 4 weeks old, the dayafter I got
him he was in the clinic for severe diarhea.. he had a intestinal
infection.. come to find out the breeder was giving him
evaporated milk !! all my babies are put on KMR with yogurt
andvitamins mixed in...well we got the infection cleared p.. willy
was then later put on the raw meat diet ( with vitamins although he
did not like the vitamins he still got them ) he would have whole
rabbit, beef, venison, squirrel ect, he acted normal, he was gaining
weight and was very healthy looking.. then on thanksgiving morning I
woke up at 4:30 am to find him in a seizure on the floor, we rushed
him to the vet and his temp was 109.. they did not think he would
make it because of the temp.. he had a few more seizures also, they
thought for sure he would be brain dead or significant damage..they
got the temp down and the seizures under control, but he was in a
coma state.. he could not move, blink his eyes or anything.. within
the next day he started coming around, he became alert again but
could not control spasms in his head, or use his back legs.. again
slowly that started to come around, he could walk at a slow pace but
if he tried to run he would lose his back legs.. within a few weeks
he was back to normal, still has some slight head twitching.. the
vets determined he had no calcium in his body.. not lack of, but
they could not find any calcium in his blood work.. they determined
it was caused by 1 of 2 things.. either mom was extremely
malnurished or 2 imbreeding/overbreeding..Willy now has to be on
double dose of pure calcium everyday for the rest of his life.. I
know I was doing everything right on my part, I have raised lions,
tigers, bears you name it, so I knew he was getting what he needed
from me ( although he did not like the supliments and I also
put egg shells in his food too , he still got it) the vets said his
body was rejectiing the calcium, that is why he has to be on double
dose so his body will absorb 1/2 of it ( the amount needed )
my heart broke the morning I found him almost dead, I just cant
understand people who breed animals just for the money.. my animals
here live like kings, they get what they need before i even think
about what I want, they did not ask to be here, I brought them
here.. if my exotics breed for me each yr that is great.. if not oh
well.. they are my babies first and formost... all breeders need to
treat their animals as if they were their kids, mine are all very
healthy, spoiled, and loved even the ones that are breeders, they
all get interaction, vet care and nutritionally sound diets.. also
willy is now on the zoopreme 100%.. he loves it and has all the
nutrition he needs, he still has to have the double dose of calcium
in it, and he gets raw meat once a day for a treat.. he is 99% back
to normal... please people do not make the mistake I did and not
know your breeder, get references from past people who bought from
them check them out.. my poor wily has gone through so much because
someone cared more about making money than raising healthy animals,
he is such a happy loving bobcat now and weighs 24 pounds at now 8
months old.. he is growing like a weed but he had a long rough
begining
